Split/Second Accelerates
onto the Consoles
The makers of PURE have made an
explosive entry into the world of
car racing.
Split/Second is an adrenaline filled thrill
ride on the Xbox 360 and
PlayStation
3. It’s
no wonder. The game was developed by
Vancouver’s
Black Rock Studios, the same folks who made
the
award winning PURE motorcycle racing
game last year.
But Black Rock Studios isn’t
resting on their laurels,
they
are once again raising the bar when
it comes to
fast action excitement on the
consoles.
The premise in Split/Second is simple. You
are a contestant on the television show Split/Second
and you race against other drivers and try
to destroy them before they destroy you.
The game is filled with big explosions and
some fast and furious game play. There’s
a lot going on in the race and at times the
action is a bit hard to follow. Get caught
up in an explosion that one of your competitors
sets off and at times you will lose your
bearing on the track.
Playing Split/Second is like being immersed
in one of the more popular car films like
the Fast and the Furious. The music in the
game is upbeat and helps to keep the adrenaline
pumping as you keep your fingers on the gas.
Going fast is part of the game, but drifting
around corners and being able to knock your
fellow racers off stride by triggering “Power
Play” explosions is the way to win
at this game. The more you drift the more “Power
Play” destruction you are able to unleash
on your fellow drivers. These “Power
Plays” range from blowing up parked
cars to bringing down water towers on the
front runners.
Structured like a television show, the game’s
single player mode is made up of 12 episodes.
Four available at a time and you have to
unlock the others to keep going. As you play
the game you will soon come to realize that
a full power bar, along with some expert
timing will unleash some incredible destruction
on your opposition.
The control scheme in the game falls between
Project Gotham Racing, Need for Speed Shift
and Burnout. The single and multiplayer campaigns
are fun and if you’re a fan of great
racing games, this game has a recipe filled
with good music, big time explosions and
plenty of exciting racing action.
