Molecule boost onto the gaming scene in
2008 with the release of Little Big Planet.
The world was introduced
to Sackboy and a revolution in gaming.
Media Molecule blazed a new trailer in user created content and now they
are following that up with an all-new trail with Little Big Planet 2.
The Sackboy experiment has paid off for Sony and Media molecule. Currently
there are over 2 million levels available to be played online that were
created by Little Big Planet players. Close to 60,000 new levels are
created every 10 days.
Sony has said that in the second version of the game gamers can look
for Sackboy to branch out and gamers will be able to experience a number
of different varieties of user-generated content. A new level creator
will not only allow users to create levels, but with a little practice
they will be able to create customized HUD and even different types of
games. Any one of a number of different types of games is possible to
create. The game within the game seems to be the new mantra with Little
Big Planet 2.
In terms of user-generated content the sky is the limit and the only
barriers are those found within gamer’s imaginations. In the original
Little Big Planet users could create vehicles that could be driven by
holding R1 to give it some gas, but the sequel will allow you to make
a car with rubber wheels and a bottle, then use a direct control seat
(a control seat is a new tool in Little Big Planet 2. Now Sackboy can
control the vehicle and with a few button presses, you can move the vehicle
backwards and forwards. You can also put a horn on the car and map it
to the X button on your PlayStation 3 controller.
By placing these “direct control” seats users can create
serpents, race cars, Mario or Command and Conquer clones. Not only can
they create it but now it can be controled by mapping the PS3 controller
buttons to the control.
Once you create a new game and map out the controls, you can share it
with others so that they can use the same game play dynamic without having
to create it from scratch. Little Big Planet 2 will push the limits of
user-generated content and will provide many hours of great game play “Media
Molecule” style.
Litte Big Planet 2 will be released later this year in time for the 2010
holiday season.
